Visual Practice HOW TO
...Switch to Direct Access EDT (Electronic Data Transfer) Service
The Direct Access Service is almost exactly the same as Datapac EDT, except, you no longer need to connect through Datapac to reach the Ministry of Health EDT Service. The Ministry of Health now maintains its own bank of modems for you to dial into.
If you have been using Datapac EDT and wish to switch to, or try, the Direct Access service, you need to be updated to Visual Practice version 1.1.98 or higher, and you need to make the following changes to the communications configuration for the billing physician(s) you want to go through Direct Access:
1. Go to Forms > Lists... > Providers
2. Look up the Billing Provider you want to modify.
3. Press the Update button ![]()
4. Go to the Bill Provider's Billing Tab > Communications Tab, as shown below:

5. Notice the new option which separates the EDT into Datapac and Direct Access. Select the EDT/Direct Access Service option.
6. If you need to dial long distance, or, if your phone system needs to pre-dial to select an outside line, place this pre-dial sequence into the "Modem Pre-Dial String". Unless you are in the local 613 area code, at minimum you will need to put 1- into your Modem Pre-Dial String.
Once you make this change, exit out of Visual Practice and log back in for these changes to take effect.
